“She’s 15? is the typical reaction that Reema Major’s performances create, and it was certainly the first thing that I thought to myself, as I documented her last performance (for Hip-Hop Canada).
Toronto’s Hip-Hop culture and community never ceases to amaze me, and Reema Major is a strong example of the technical versatility and multiculturalism that defines the revolutionary and diverse Hip-Hop community that I have had the honor of documenting since 2007 (specifically for my photographic essay on the city’s Hip-Hop scene — “Project T Dot”).
At 15 years of age, Reema is a true master of ceremonies, and she possesses the ability to command, energize, captivate, and entertain a crowd, unlike any other teenage Hip-Hop recording artist that I have ever come across (along with Diggy Simmons, who is also 15 years old).
Off-stage, she is seemingly a mature and confident teenager, but on-stage, it’s a different story — her stage presence is impressive, and she could easily pass for 22 years of age, and the countless hours that she has invested into her craft become obvious to all those around her.
Because she has recently been signed to Universal Music and Interscope Records, and also due to the fact that she was the only Canadian, and the youngest MC in this year’s BET Awards Cypher, it’s safe for me to say that Reema Major is ahead of her time, and has the raw talent, drive, focus, commitment and intuition needed for stardom.
Obviously, she has a lot of room to grow, and a great deal of improvement and music-related life lessons and obstacles ahead of her, but she has the advantage of being quite mature for her age, in addition to being off to a great start, career-wise.
I’m definitely looking forward to observing her evolution as an artist over the years.
